Enna is the principal city in the only province in Sicily that does not overlook the sea. The main thoroughfare of the ancient town centre is via Roma where there are buildings of various eras and numerous squares including the little piazza Duomo dominated by the Church of Maria Santissima della Visitazione, the town’s cathedral built in the 14th century and restructured several times incorporating Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque styles with an enormous bell in a tower on the façade.
The city’s symbols include: the Castle of Lombardia, built in Norman times on the site of previously existing constructions, which fell into decline under the Bourbons when it became a prison with three inner courtyards, a chapel and Imperial lodgings; and the tower of Frederick II, a medieval castled building that was a military outpost in the Middle Ages surrounded by an urban park of the same name. It was probably built during the reign of King Frederick II of Swabia and includes the remains of a vast octagonal wall that opened with two arched gates and a great octagonal tower at its centre.
