Rising on a gulf in the shape of a sickle, Trapani, ancient Drepanum, was an important Phoenician trading post, later featuring in the Punic wars.
It conserves a wealth of artefacts from successive dominations. The historical centre covers a vast area: on the tip of the gulf is the neighbourhood built by the Spanish in the 1300s known as quartiere Palazzo, and restructured in the Baroque era. Beautiful Baroque buildings including the Cathedral of San Lorenzo stand on rua Grande, present-day corso Vittorio Emanuele which was inaugurated in the 13th century. The street continues as corso Italia ending in front of Palazzo Senatorio whose ornate façade features statues and columns, two clocks and a 13th century tower.
