The Castle of Lombardia, the symbol of Enna, rises on the highest point in the city and is one of the largest medieval castles in Italy. It was built in 1130 by the Norman king, Ruggiero II of Sicily, on the remains of the ancient acropolis and Byzantine, Arab and Norman fortifications. It is divided into three large courtyards and a rivellino (a narrow, walled strip) with structures built to defend and house the royal court.
Of the original 20 towers, only 6 are still standing, three of which are almost intact. The best conserved is the 13th century torre Pisana (or Delle Aquile), decorated with Guelf Merlons, from where lookouts could control a large swathe of Sicily and, on clear days, the sea.
At the foot of the castle is the statue of Eunus, the Syrian slave who started the First Servile War in 132 B.C.E.
