Following the umpteenth plan by Dr. Eggman to take over the world, Sonic must put the world’s continents back together. Among the various locations featured is the city of Spagonia, the architecture of which is based mainly on that of various European cities. There are references to Spain, London (with a huge clock tower that’s something of a mix between Big Ben and the Torre del Mangia), and above all Italy. The appearance of the houses, the roads and the churches is very reminiscent of the city of Siena. There are small characteristic details like the cobblestone paving, the red roof tiles and the small balconies decorated with flowers, for example, although the game does not make specific mention of the Tuscan city.

The game tries to revive the fates of the franchise after the Sonic Team’s slip-up with Sonic The Hedgehog (2006). In this instalment, the developers try to return to the game’s roots, sticking to the tried-and-tested formula and adding a new twist. Indeed, the levels are divided into two stages, with one taking place during the day and one at night. In the first, Sonic can run at supersonic speed like in previous instalments of the game, alternating sequences with 3D and 2D shots. At night, the gameplay changes: Sonic must fight his way through enemies, not by running through them but by facing them head on like in a hack ‘n’ slash.
