The accent of the protagonists leaves us in no doubt as to the Romagnol setting of the film.
Filming for Italian Race therefore couldn’t have taken place anywhere without a history of car racing in Italy. The film is set in Imola, a town in Romagna that hosted the San Marino Grand Prix for 25 years, up until 2006. It is a city that shines during the fast-paced chase through the old town which cuts right through the heart of the city, piazza Matteotti.
The racing scenes were filmed at not only Imola racetrack, but other historical tracks too: Vallelunga, in the municipality of Campagnano di Roma, at Mugello, near Florence, and at Monza, one of the oldest racetracks in the world and the historical home of the Italian Grand Prix, with the race scenes along the paddock.
The illegal racing scenes in which Loris, on board his family’s Peugeot 205 Turbo, seeks redemption for himself and his siblings, take place in the splendid setting of Matera; starting on the Mattei runway at Basilicata Airport, in Pisticci, the race runs down the road that weaves up over the Calanchi and ends in the famous Sassi, the symbol of the city named European Capital of Culture for 2019 and a World Heritage Site.
