Due to the peculiarity and uniqueness of its historic center Matera is also known as the city of the Sassi. Excaved and constructed close to the Gravina of Matera, a deep gorge that divides into two the territory forming the Sassi of Matera, districts that make up the ancient part of the city, stretch out into two valleys slightly exposed to the surrounding territories, separated by rocky spur of the Civita.
The Sasso Barisano, the center of the old town, is the richest of sculpted portals and friezes that hide its underground heart. The Sasso Caveoso vaguely takes the form of a theatrical cave, from which perhaps it takes its name. In the middle, the Civita, on the top of which there is the Cathedral and the noble palaces. Together they form the ancient urban nucleus of Matera, declared cultural landscape by UNESCO.
