The film’s action takes place in Acquasalubre, where the protagonists live. The town is also home to the thermal baths of Salsomaggiore (actually the Berzieri Thermal Baths, in the province of Parma), and it is here that Camillo meets Vittoria in secret and where they see Vittoria’s little sister dance. The town used for filming was Lucera (FG). More specifically, we see the protagonists in Piazza Duomo: this is home to the barber shop that Camillo’s brother Leone works in, along with their home and the bar where Vittoria and Camillo organise an encounter for Orlando that ends up costing Camillo dearly. Some filming also took place in Rome. More specifically, after a trip to Lourdes during which Camillo meets Orlando, the train stops at Roma Centrale station, which is actually Roma Porta San Paolo station in Piazzale Ostiense. Camillo returns to Rome when he’s recovered the use of his legs to showcase some of his inventions and stops at a gallery to buy a hat for Orlando. This is actually the Sciarra Gallery, in the Trevi district.

Camillo, the barber of Acquasalubre, has lost the use of his legs. Doctors say there’s nothing to be done: the problem is psychosomatic and was brought on by the end of his relationship with Vittoria. The return of his love will cure him, but in the meantime Fascism takes hold in Italy.
