On arrival in Parma, Dora (Catherine Spaak) walks out of the station and across piazza Carlo Alberto Dalla Chiesa, listening in amusement to the conversation of two men just ahead of her. Shots of piazza Garibaldi and piazza Duomo, respectively the civic and religious centres of the city, follow immediately after. Carrying her suitcase, Dora walks alongside the river Parma that cuts through the town and quickly gets to piazzale Salvo D’Acquisto, where Scipio (Salvo Rondone) and his wife Amneris (Didi Perego) will host her for a while.
Dora’s guardian is the parish priest of the Church dell'Assunta, in piazza Ducale in Sabbioneta (MN): she begins her escape to Riccione from here, on the back of a motor-scooter behind a seminary student.
Amneris introduces Dora into the social life of Parma: we see them first in a large drawing room, actually the entrance to the Terme Berzieri in Salsomaggiore (PR), and several scenes later, in the salone San Paolo (transformed into a ballroom) in Palazzo di Riserva, the headquarters of the Società di Lettura e Conversazione di Parma: here Dora meets Michele Pantanò (Lando Buzzanca). They begin to spend time together: the monastic complex of St. John the Evangelist, a Benedictine abbey that overlooks the square of the same name behind piazza Duomo, appears behind them on a walk. Not long after, the two are seen in a boat on the lake of Parco Ducale.
The beach scenes where Dora meets Nino (Manfredi) were shot in Rimini, facing the Grand Hotel, but when the man moans to her about his penurious life, they are actually walking along lungomare Lutazio Catulo in Ostia, identifiable by the Zodiac fountain.
In the Rome sequences, Nino has a photographic studio in via del Corso (the obelisk of piazza del Popolo can be seen in the distance). Not far off, in via Brunetti, is the food outlet belonging to an older woman with whom he starts a relationship.
Other locations include Villa Paveri Fontana, now Villa Santucci Fontanelli, a Renaissance and Baroque building set in a large park in Collecchio (PR), and the banks of the River Po near Boretto (RE).
