The horror film Pantafa is Emanuele Scaringi’s second feature-length work. The main characters are Marta (Kasia Smutniak) and her daughter Nina (Greta Santi) who move from the city to a small mountain village, the imaginary Malanotte. Marta hopes that a quieter life and mountain air will help her daughter who suffers from sleep paralysis, a disturbance that causes hallucinatory states. Their new home, however, proves to be fairly unhospitable and not without surprises.
The setting of the small mountain village is a collage of various places in the province of Rome, including the square of Guidonia Montecelio, a stable near Arcinazzo Romano, a farmhouse in the municipality of Anguillara, the cave of Arsoli, Castel di Tora and lake Turano, the ancient cemetery of Affile, the beech forest and the roads in the mountain villages of Monte Livata and Campo dell’Osso, in addition to several shots of the villages of Roviano,Riofreddo, Subiaco and Vallinfreda.
The antagonist of the narrative, which provides the horror elements in the film, is the malign presence of Pantafa: according to a popular legend, the creature settles on a victim’s chest to steal their breath.
