Man-made lake Turano stretches out in the heart of the Cicolano mountains, a large range in the province of Rieti. It was created in 1939 when the river Turano was dammed to produce hydroelectricity and avoid potential flooding of the plain of Rieti. Situated at an altitude of 536m, it is approx. 10km long while a complete circuit of its craggy borders adds up to approx.36 km.
The banks of lake Turano are unusual in featuring a continuation of bays, promontories and little beaches. The countryside is dotted with little hill towns overlooking the lake, the best known being Colle di Tora and Castel di Tora. On the north-eastern side of the lake is the Nature Reserve of Monte Navegna and Monte Cervia which protects an area embracing mountains, hills and deep canyons. The fosso dell’Obito is one of the most famous gullies in Lazio and of particular significance. Nearby Antuni Castle, an ancient building perched on a steep hill, stretches out in the direction of lake Turano.
