In the heart of the Park of Monti Simbruini, Subiaco (RM) is set amidst the intense green of the woods, the River Aniene and the imposing rock. It was the cradle of Benedictine monasticism and of printing in Italy: the hermit St. Benedict of Norcia lived in the hills here for three years in an inaccessible cave. The small cave is today protected by the Monastery of the Sacro Speco which, camouflaged into the hill, hanging off the cliff with a wonderful view over the valley, houses two frescoed churches, one above the other.
The only survivor of the many monasteries founded by St. Benedict, the Monastery of Santa Scolastica houses three cloisters – Romanesque, Gothic and Renaissance – a bell tower, a neoclassical church built in the 1700s and a library that has become a national monument.
The historical centre of Subiaco features the Church and Convent of St. Francis and the bridge of the same name. The borgo is dominated by the medieval Rocca dei Borgia on high which was the birthplace of Cesare and Lucrezia at the end of the 1400s.
