Castel di Tora (RI) is situated in the Valle del Turano overlooking the north-eastern shore of Lake Turano.
The first reports of this town of medieval origins date to the 11th century when it appears in contemporary accounts as Castrum Vetus de Ophiano making it no coincidence that it was known as Castelvecchio until 1864. This was later replaced by the present name which evokes the Roman centre of Tora, famous as the setting for the martyrdom of Santa Anatolia in 251.
The pentagonal tower of the ancient medieval castle remains today, while other architectural features include the medieval Church of St. John the Evangelist, restored in the 17th century, and the Fountain of the Triton (1898).
