Marsala is the only Italian location used by Matteo Garrone for his film Io Capitano, an Italy-Belgium coproduction in competition at the 80th Venice Film Festival. Shooting took place mostly in the harbour area of the Sicilian town. The film also shot in Senegal and Morocco.
The cast features Seydou Sarr, Moustapha Fall and Ibrahima Gueye and recounts the challenging journey undertaken by Seydou and Moussa (newcomers Seydou Sarr and Moustapha Fall) as they leave Dakar hoping to reach Europe. A contemporary Odyssey through the tricks of the desert, the horrors of the detention centres in Libya and the dangers of the sea.
The film, written by Matteo Garrone, Massimo Gaudioso, Massimo Ceccherini, Andrea Tagliaferri, originated in an outline written by Garrone and was inspired by the true stories of Kouassi Pli Adama Mamadou, Arnaud Zohin, Amara Fofana, Brhane Tareke and Siaka Doumbia who all survived the journey taken by the main characters.
