Rising on the ruins of ancient Punic Lilibeo, Marsala (TP) is the easternmost city in Sicily, famous not only for its wine but as the landing point for Garibaldi’s Thousand in Sicily.
The historical centre demonstrates the centuries of urban development: a quadrilateral, it was once enclosed by four ancient gates, two of which still exist. The principal thoroughfare, via XI Maggio (known locally as the Càssaro), is lined with shops and boutiques, the majestic Baroque façade of the Chiesa Madre, dedicated to St. Thomas of Canterbury, and the 16th century Monastery of St. Peter in the ancient Jewish area; heading northwest it ends at piazza della Vittoria which features a monument to Garibaldi and in the opposite direction at piazza Matteotti. The imposing porta di Mare, nowadays porta Garibaldi, stands in via Garibaldi. Nearby the military complex of the 17th century Spanish quarter features Palazzo VII Aprile which dates to the 1500/1600s and is today the setting for the municipal administration.
