The Lions of Sicily is a saga of love, family, success, war and revolution set in 19th-century Sicily up to the unification of Italy in 1861. Directed by Paolo Genovese, the series is based on the best seller by Stefania Auci and tells the story of the Florio family. Brothers Paolo and Ignazio Florio are small-time spice merchants looking to advance in society. Having escaped from a Calabria anchored in the past, they invent a future in Sicily, transforming a run-down shop into a thriving business. The revolutionary ideas of Vincenzo, Paolo's son, will transform it into an empire. The explosive arrival of Giulia, a strong and intelligent woman whose behaviour contrasts with the rigid social rules of the time, overwhelms Vincenzo's life and the whole family.
The series stars Michele Riondino as Vincenzo Florio, Miriam Leone as Giulia Portalupi, Donatella Finocchiaro as Giuseppina, Vinicio Marchioni as Paolo Florio, Eduardo Scarpetta as Ignazio (Vincenzo's son), Paolo Briguglia as Ignazio (Vincenzo's uncle), Ester Pantano as young Giuseppina and Adele Cammarata as Giovanna D'Ondes.
Palermo provided an open-air set for the series, taken back 200 years in time, in particular the historic centre: piazza Pretoria, piazza Bellini, piazza Villena, via Maqueda and via Vittorio Emanuele. Locations included historic buildings such as Palazzo Comitini, Palazzo Gangi Valguarnera (famous as the location for Luchino Visconti’s The Leopard (1963), Palazzo dei Normanni and Palazzo Alliata di Villafranca; in addition to the Church of Spasimo, via Dante, Palazzo Mirto, largo Niccolò Longobardi and the area of piazza Sett'Angeli.
Scenes were also filmed in Favignana (tuna factory), Marsala (cellars), Trapani (villa Nasi) and Cefalù, as well as in Rome.
