The city of Catanzaro, administrative centre of the region of Calabria, overlooks the Gulf of Squillace and is also known as “the city of two seas” because of its location on the isthmus that separates the Ionian and Tyrrhenian Seas. The Municipality rises from the coastline, with its 8km of beach and tourist harbour, to the valle della Fiumarella and the three hills (Vescovato, San Trifone or San Rocco, San Giovanni or Castello) where the historical centre is located.
Catanzaro boasts approximately 60 churches in its territory, including the City Cathedral of Our Lady of the Assumption, the Basilica of the Immaculate Conception and the Church of the Sacred Rosary. Elegant noble residences can be found in the historical centre, between ancient neighbourhoods and corso Mazzini, such as Palazzo Fazzari, an example of eclectic architecture.
Catanzaro is also the headquarters for Università degli Studi "Magna Grecia", an institute of higher learning situated in over 170 hectares in the valley of the River Corace in the Germaneto area.
