The area of Serre Vibonesi is an extended hill system situated on a vast high plain that slopes, with irregular pitch, towards the Ionian sea in the East and the basin of the Mesima river in the West. It is located in the Calabrian Apennines, between the Sila and Aspromonte mountain ranges and is part of the Serre Regional Nature Park which covers over 17,700 hectares and comprises 26 municipalities across the provinces of Vibo Valentia, Catanzaro and Reggio Calabria.
The wealth of vegetation includes the most commonly found trees in the Mediterranean undergrowth, such as chestnut, Bosnian pine, alder, Neapolitan alder, beech and European silver fir. The principal animal species in the area are the wolf and the porcupine.
