Mount Cocuzzo, whose name derives from the Greek and means “bad stone” or “bad cave”, is part of the Southern Apennine range, situated between the territory of Longobardi and Mendicino (province of Cosenza). At 1,541 m above sea level, it is the highest peak in the coastal chain.
Covered by woodland which is interrupted in places by areas with a lunar aspect caused by the unusual rock formations in the area known as the little Dolomites, it is filled with birds of prey and little high-altitude passerines. Its peak offers a 360° vision of the surrounding territory, stretching from the Sila range to Pollino and the Tyrrhenian Sea.
During the Middle Ages, mount Cocuzzo was associated with the legend of the mountain of fire and for a long time was presumed to have volcanic origins, however research into the geomorphological features of the terrain and hills has discovered Dolomitic formation.
