Tures Castle is an imposing fortification built north-east of Campo Tures. Despite the competition from the majestic mountains that encircle the basin of Campo Tures, Tures Castle is an impressive sight. It is clear from the history of its construction that it was a castle of considerable dynastic importance in the Middle Ages. Built at the beginning of the 13th century on an outcrop that separates the Tures Valley from the Aurina Valley, the main part of the castle faces Mount Acereto to the north (attack side), and is composed of the watchtower and another tower next to it with rooms for the castle’s inhabitants, while the house of the castellan (later used as a granary) is situated in a sheltered position to the west. The built area with a landscape area in front of it is surrounded by a wall, resting against which are several dwellings, mostly dating back to the early 16th century. The fortifications around the entrance tower (15th century) are of particular importance for the study of castles. With regard to the interior, the most noteworthy elements are the Gothic frescoes in the chapel, featuring a rare deesis, and the numerous comfortably furnished wood-panelled rooms. Some cautious restoration work was carried out during the 19th and 20th centuries. Tures has been the setting for the films such as “The Red Violin”, which won an Oscar for best soundtrack, “Just Married”, “Jakob Hutter und die Hutterer, Märtyrer des Glaubens“, etc.
