Castel Tasso is located on a high rocky spur near the reclaimed Vipiteno swamp, in the municipality of Campo di Trens. The castle was first mentioned in 1100 as a fiefdom of the Bavarian Lechsgmünd counts; the manor later became a fiefdom of the lords of Stilves who renovated the structure and renamed it “Castel Tasso”.
The structure is particularly well preserved, having never been conquered or destroyed throughout its history. The small Church of San Zeno is part of the complex, where Baiuvarii coffins dating between the 4th and 8th centuries were found. In total 10 rooms can be visited, some of which are still in perfect condition.
The tower dates to the 12th century, while the building below is 15th century. The green room, rich in ornamental paintings with a graceful wooden grate from the late Gothic period is particularly interesting. Other features that make Castel Tasso a typical medieval manor include the sliding portcullis, torture room, court room and underground prison.
