The botanical gardens of Castel Trauttmansdorff, on the eastern edge of Merano, cover 12 hectares and comprise a range of plants from all over the world.
The unique natural shape of the place, a terraced amphitheatre extending across a height difference of over 100m, offers changing views over the thermal city of Merano, Val d'Adige and the surrounding mountains, and intriguing perspectives on the world of exotic-Mediterranean gardens.
The gardens are divided into four themed areas: "boschi del mondo" (woods of the world) reproduce in miniature the woods of America and Asia; the "giardini del sole" (gardens of the sun) wind through Mediterranean landscapes; the "giardini acquatici e terrazzati" (aquatic and terraced gardens) comprise staircases and waterways; while the "paesaggi dell'Alto Adige" (landscapes of Alto Adige) offer a look at the indigenous local flora. A range of artistic pavilions interpret the themes of nature aesthetically, combining playful entertainment with didactic information. Also noteworthy are the ‘floating’ viewing platform created by Matteo Thun, birdcage, cave with multimedia show and stage over the lake for open-air concerts. Thanks to the wonderful combination of art and nature, the gardens were designated Italy’s most beautiful in 2005.
