Tirolo Castle, home of the counts of Tyrol, in the town of that name near Merano, houses the Museo storico-culturale della Provincia di Bolzano (South Tyrolean Museum of Culture and Provincial History). The core of the museum is the castle itself. It includes the southern building with chapel, the eastern building and the western wing which houses the museum shop and a so-called "temple", one of the oldest parts of the castle, used in the Middle Ages to store the treasures and weapons of the counts of Tyrol.
The castle also comprises a café and rooms for temporary exhibitions. An interactive journey through the castle, which has seen great changes over the centuries, illustrates the main themes of local, artistic and social history, and daily life at Tirolo Castle in the Middle Ages.
