Castelluccio di Monticolo, with its medieval outlines, is located close to lake Monticolo near a reed thicket, in the middle of the woods, perfectly set in the surrounding landscape.
It was built between 1886 and 1888 by Josef von Zastrow of Prussia in the midst of the medieval revival era and features quarred stone masonry, ogival windows, stepped gables, turrets, spoon-shaped slits.
The castle, formerly owned by the Wolkenstein-Trostburg counts, was also the residence of local painter Max Sparer (1886-1968). In 1902 it was acquired by the Municipality of Appiano along with the surrounding lakes.
