The Emperor’s Castle is located in Piazza delle Carceri in Prato. It is the only remaining example of Swabian architecture, and was built on the orders of Frederick II, Duke of Swabia and ruler of Northern Italy. It sits where the fort of the Conti Alberti of Prato used to be, which was almost completely razed to the ground in 1107 during the siege of the troops of Matilda of Tuscany; in its place another palace was built, the ‘Palazzolo’.
