The town of Avigliana is located in a natural moraine amphitheatre in the Bassa Valle di Susa, about 20km from Turin. The area is characterised by the two lakes that flank it, the looming mountains and the Sacra di San Michele.
In the ancient borgo, piazza Conte Rosso features medieval buildings, a well from the 1300s and the ruins of a 10th century castle. The 13th-14th century Torre dell’Orologio can be found in via dell’Orologio. The staircase in Borgo San Pietro leads to the Romanesque-Gothic Church of San Pietro, established in the 10th century, with a terracotta façade, Romanesque bell tower and precious 14th and 15th century frescoes. Also worthy of note is the medieval Church of Santa Maria with its 13th century bell tower.
