The town of Chieti is situated on a hill in a panoramic position between the Majella mountain range and the Adriatic Sea. It has two distinct sections: Chieti Alta, the historical centre, and Chieti Scalo, the modern town with university campus. Corso Marrucino is the main thoroughfare in the heart of the historical centre: from piazza Trento e Trieste it coasts piazza Gian Battista Vico, crosses piazza Gian Gabriele Valignani and ends on via Arniense; the Church of San Francesco della Scarpa, built in 1239, stands on the Corso.
The town’s architectural styles overlap, blending ages from Roman times to modern day through medieval and Renaissance, with Baroque and Neo-Gothic elements. Signs of the Roman settlement can be seen in the Roman Theatre (dating to latter half of 2nd century C.E.), the ruins of the sacred buildings of the Roman Temples complex and the cistern of the ancient Thermal baths.
The ancient part of the town holds notable civil and religious buildings and noble palazzi, including the imposing Cathedral of San Giustino with its late 1400s bell tower, the 16th century Palazzo del Comune with late medieval courtyard, Palazzo di Giustizia and Palazzo Mezzanotte.
