Vasto (CH) is a town with a charm that evokes times gone by. Overlooking the gulf of the Trabocchi, it has ancient origins: there are visible remains of the Roman amphitheatre, the cistern of Santa Chiara and the thermal baths of Histonium (100-200 C.E) where precious mosaics of Neptune and other marine scenes were found. The most significant buildings from medieval times include the Fort, an unusual building whose original Anjevin nucleus was subsequently obscured by imposing Aragonese bastions. In addition are the admirable Palazzo d’Avalos with its stunning gardens, one of the most significant examples of Renaissance architecture in Abruzzo; the Rossetti theatre (one of the first in Abruzzo); and the Art Deco Politeama Ruzzi. Walking along the Loggia Amblingh is an unforgettable experience which offers a breath-taking view over the gulf. The Vasto marina has a wide sandy beach and shallow seafloor, while the coast becomes more jagged heading North with evocative cliffs, enchanting bays and inlets. The Vasto coastline also features an enchanting nature reserve which extends from the area of Punta Penna to Punta Aderci.
