The town of Teramo is full of signs of the splendour of times gone by: splendour which can nowadays be seen in the curvilinear walls of the ampitheatre, in the majestic arches of the vomitoriums at the theatre, the paved floors of the domus, which houses a fierce statue of a lion mauling its prey. It’s a splendour that can also be seen in the beautiful Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta, building on which was started in 1158, a time of conflict between the two great families of Melatino and Mazzaclocchi. The surrounding area, in the shadow of the Gran Sasso Mountain range, is home to other Romanesque art gems: the churches of San Giovanni ad Insulam, Santa Maria di Ronzano, Santa Maria a Vico and Santa Maria di Propezzano.
