One of the most important historical villas in the Modena area, Villa Sorra, is located in Gaggio in the municipality of Castelfranco Emilia. The estate includes the villa, farm buildings, stables and garden.
The villa, probably designed by Giuseppe Antonio Torri, is a significant example of Baroque in Emilia. The interior is dominated by a large central drawing room with pavilion ceiling. Spread around it are two smaller rooms, four apartments, the chapel, the imperial staircase and the two entrance loggias.
The garden was built in the 1700s to the tastes of the time and restructured in the first half of the 1800s following the new composition rules for the English-style garden that had become popular then. The final result is the most representative example of a 19th century Romantic garden in the Estense area. It comprises a terrace with viewpoint, several fake medieval ruins, a neogothic orangerie and various water courses among other elements.
