The fascinating architecture of Rocchetta Mattei, built from 1859 over the ruins of the ancient fortress of Savignano in the municipality of Grizzana Morandi (BO), reflects the eclectic spirit of its builder, Count Cesare Mattei, a thinker, scholar and practitioner of the empirical medicine known as electro-homeopathy that made him famous throughout Europe.
The structure of the castle was modified several times by the count and his heirs, becoming a labyrinth of towers, imposing staircases, reception rooms and private rooms with Gothic-Medieval and Moorish influences. The most picturesque areas include the courtyard of the Lions, a reproduction of the courtyard of the Alhambra in Granada, and the chapel which imitates the Cathedral of Cordova.
It was restored by Fondazione Cassa di Risparmio di Bologna, the proprietors since 2005.
