Thought to date to 960, imposing Rossena Castle is located in the borgo bearing the same name, a hamlet of the municipality of Canossa (RE) which rises on a reddish volcanic outcrop from where it dominates a wide swathe of the plain and the Tuscan-Emilian Apennine ridge.
It belonged to Bonifacio di Canossa in the 11th century and was seized by the da Correggio family in the 13th century who held it until 1612 when it passed to the Duchy of Parma; in the first half of the 19th century, it welcomed Marie Louise, Duchess of Parma as the ruling lady of the area at the time.
Just beneath the castle, on its eastern flank, is the borgo of Rossena, with a double rank of buildings on the side of the main road. On a rocky peak facing Rossena and overlooking Campotrera oasis, Rossenella Tower rises in isolation, a sign of the great defensive system that surrounded the all-important Canossa Castle.
