The Rocca Manfrediana e Veneziana stands on one of the three chalky pinnacles that dominate the village of Brisighella (Ravenna).
Built in 1310 by the Manfredi lords of Faenza, the fortress remained in this family until 1500, when it passed to Cesare Borgia for just three years. From 1503 to 1509 it belonged to the Venetians who built the grandiose keep and two sides of the walls, before passing to the Papal State. At the end of the 1500s the two towers were covered with a roof.
The fortress retains medieval characteristics: holes for the drawbridge chains above the entrance; corbels and machicolations; walkways on the perimeter walls, arrow slits.
The structure today houses a museum dedicated to the relationship between Man and Plaster, in keeping with its imposing architectural frame and the internal spaces which have been empty until now. The Museum of Man and Chalk offers a journey through the long history of man's relationship with this land and the mineral that characterizes it.
