The trenches dug into the bare rock of the Carso range or on the slopes of the Julian Prealps bear witness to the battles fought in the area between 1915-1917.
Today part of the WWI Theme Park (Parco tematico della grande guerra), well-conserved trenches can be found on the high plateaus behind Monfalcone (GO). The Park, which extends over about 4 km2, features Austro-Hungarian defensive structures, artillery positions and shelters for the soldiers. Some of the most famous sites are the Joffre trench, the Virgin cave and the Cuzzi trench.
