The open-air museum on mount Hermada preserves the Austro-Hungarian defensive line fortified in September 1916 after the 6th battle of the Isonzo. The Italian victory forced the Habsburg army to abandon the heights of Monfalcone (Gorizia) and occupy this area of the Trieste Karst.
It was possible to control both the Brestovizza valley (Brestovica Dol, today in Slovenia) and the road to Trieste, the Habsburg city claimed by the Italians, from mount Hermada. The sinkholes, the passages between the rocks, and the natural caves of the karst plateau were perfect for the needs of the army in WWI. Trenches, posts and shelters for soldiers were quickly built, making this new defensive line an insurmountable barrier for the Italians.
