Monfalcone is not only an important industrial centre, the city also has unusual historical facets, like the fortress of medieval origin, a symbol of the city, which houses the paleontological museum, with finds from 500 million years ago that illustrate the geological history of the area.
The Church of the Marcelliana stands on a site of ancient cultic practices, remodelled several times over the centuries. The Municipal Gallery of Contemporary Art is located in the restored building that was once the covered market in the city centre; since 2004 it is part of the AMACI - Association of Italian Contemporary Art Museums, and one of the largest exhibition spaces dedicated to the contemporary art of Friuli Venezia Giulia.
Outside Monfalcone, the Great war theme park offers an immersive experience of the 1915-1918 period with walks through the trenches and walkways. The Park is connected by CAI (Italian Alpine Club) paths, cart tracks and trenches to the Open-air Museum of the Sinkhole of the 15th Marksmen Regiment, the open-air Museum of San Martino del Carso and the open-air Museum of San Michele.
