Angera stands on the south-eastern bank of Lake Maggiore, in the province of Varese. The hamlet is famous for its lakeside walk and for the Rocca di Angera, also known as Rocca Borromea. This medieval castle, rising up from a rocky promontory to defend the residential centre, has carefully conserved its history as the home of the Borromeo family, housing priceless frescoes in the Sala della Giustizia, painted by Lombard masters between the Romanesque and Gothic movements. It also is home to the first Doll Museum in Italy which was inaugurated in 1988 and has a collection of over 1,000 dolls, toys and model robots.
The lakeside walk is characterised by wide green areas, known locally as pratoni, and by the Allea, a street lined with linden and horse chestnut trees which is also a traditional meeting place for residents, as the setting for the market and celebrations such as the Santuary della Madonna della Riva.
The historical centre can be reached from the lakeside by a series of streets that follow the ancient Roman-era urban plan, intersecting with the pedestrian walkway Via Mario Grappi.
