Piazza della Repubblica (formerly piazza Esedra) is one of Rome’s most famous squares. Located several hundred metres from Termini station in the Castro Pretorio neighbourhood, it is the starting point for some of the city’s most important streets, including via Nazionale.
A large rotunda with a central fountain, the fountain of the Naiads by Mario Rutelli (1901), it is encircled by elegant porticoes designed by Gaetano Koch (1887-1898).
Adjacent to Diocletian’s Baths stands the Basilica di Santa Maria degli Angeli e dei Martiri, a church on a Greek cross layout appropriated from the ancient thermal complex and designed by Michelangelo.
