The Giau Pass (2,236 m) is a mountain pass in the Dolomites that connects Colle Santa Lucia with Cortina d’Ampezzo. It is located at the centre of a vast open plain at the foot of mounts Nuvolau (2,574m) and Averau, in a panoramic area which features numerous peaks (Marmolada, Tofane, Cristallo, Sorapiss, Croda da Lago, Lastoni di Formin, Cadini di Misurina).
This is one of the mountain passes made legendary by the Giro d’Italia, especially the Colle Santa Lucia side which is known for its difficulty (10.1 km long, 9.1% average gradient) and its consistency, while the Cortina d’Ampezzo approach is shorter (8.6 km) and slightly less steep (8.3% average gradient).
It has been used as a location for a range of films, including several scenes in Ladyhawke.
