Castelrotto is a small village in the province of Bolzano that also includes 11 hamlets scattered across a territory with a range in altitude of approximately 2,000m. Its name derives from the fortress which used to stand here, of which only the ruins of the Chapel of St. Anthony remain today.
Part of the Sciliar Natural Park, on the slopes of the Siusi Alp, its picturesque appearance makes it a popular tourist destination. The historical centre has a typical medieval layout with the oldest buildings, now residential in use, clustered around a central square. Built in the 1800s, the Neoclassical Church of St. Peter and Paul with bell tower of 88m is a symbol of the village.
Distinctive to the surrounding countryside are the masi – dwellings used by mountain farmers and characterised by the presence of ample haybarns – some of which date to the 13th century.
