Dating to the 7th century B.C.E., the Etruscan necropolis of San Giuliano is located on the flanks of a tuff rock near the borgo of Barbarano Romano (VT). The necropolis stands inside the Natural Regional Park of Marturanum, its name originating from the ruins of a medieval church.
The settlement conserves archaeological evidence that extends from the Villanovan period (10th century B.C.E.) to the Middle Ages. For this reason, the site has a range of different tomb types and monuments: “cube” tombs, tombs with porticoes, with pitched roofs, tumuli, and the remains of medieval buildings. Given their similarity to modern-day residential buildings, two large “half cube” tombs are known as the palazzine or “apartments”, their entrances leading to the funeral chambers in alignment with each other.
The tombs with porticoes, also used for funeral rituals, have an open room above the funerary chamber and a pitched roof supported by a rock-cut column. The largest tomb is that of the Regina, (the Queen), whose façade is 10 m tall; nearby, the tomb of the Deer has a bas-relief sculpture of a stag and wolf fighting, above a side staircase.
