Used since 700 B.C.E., the Etruscan necropolis of Pian di Mola takes its name from the plain where it is situated near Tuscania (province of Viterbo). It comprises terraced tombs most of which were dug out of the rock between 700- 100 B.C.E.
There are also late Hellenistic tombs which conserve a range of locally-produced terracotta sarcophagi, and “cube” rock tombs. One of the most famous is the tomb with the portico which is embedded in the rockface and has three burial chambers. It once had an entrance portico and statues of sphinxes and lions decorating its roof; a side ladder made a roof terrace accessible.
The artefacts discovered in the necropolis are now conserved in the National Archaeological Museum of Tuscania.
