The protected nature reserve of the Parco regionale di Veio (Veio Regional Park) covers about 15,000 hectares in the province of Rome between the consular roads of via Cassia and via Flaminia. The park is part of the territory of the Agro Veientano where gentle hills alternate with deep woody gullies and wide plains, all produced by the activity of the Sabatino and Sacrofano volcanoes which began 600,000 years ago. Its valleys, narrow and deep or with steep drops, were formed over millions of years with flowing water eroding the tuff rock. The abundant water table in this volcanic area created many springs, providing both cold and warm mineral waters.
Numerous nature trails inside the park lead to waterfalls, woods, necropolises or tombs cut from tuff rock by the Etruscans. In this area, natural and historical-cultural elements combine to create a landscape that is absolutely unique. Traces of human occupation in the park date to the times of the Etruscans, Faliscans, Romans, with artefacts suggesting prehistoric rudimentary villages, Roman villas, fortified medieval borgos, and Renaissance residences right through to the agricultural buildings of the past century.
