The Parco regionale urbano del Pineto (Pineto Regional City Park) is a city park and a protected nature reserve that extends for 240 hectares in the north east of Rome between via Trionfale, via della Pineta Sacchetti and the Valle Aurelia neighbourhood.
It includes a valley known as the valle dell'Inferno, which once extended to the Vatican walls and was covered with vineyards and farmhouses. In the 16th century, a villa was built in the park for the Sacchetti family which is now in ruins: the architect Pietro da Cortona had not included the tuff composition of the land in his calculations. There are two casali in the park which are used as centres for documentation and education. The casale del Giannotto, also built in the 16th century, was restored by the Torlonia family who planted the pine forest in the flat area along the road leading to the ruins of villa Sacchetti. This has been the location for the biblioteca comunale Casa del Parco since 2006.
The park boasts a wealth of biodiversity, with 600 species of flora and 71 species of bird reported. It features Mediterranean maquis with an abundant prevalence of cork: the most common fauna in the area are the hazel mouse, the wild mouse and the barred grass snake.
