The Parco urbano pineta di Castel Fusano (Castel Fusano City Park and Pine Forest) is a protected nature reserve of about 1,000 hectares, part of the Riserva naturale statale Litorale Romano (Litorale Romano State Nature Reserve). It is located in the municipality of Rome, not far from the mouth of the Tiber river, and comprises a large, man-made pine forest and historical archaeological ruins such as Villa della Palombara, Villa Chigi and part of the via Severiana which linked ancient Fiumicino with Terracina.
Villa della Palombara, whose name derives from the presence of a large holm oak used in the 19th century to hunt palombi (wild doves), was wrongly identified for years as the villa belonging to Pliny the Younger, and only recently recognised as the Villa of the orator Hortensius, a rival to Cicero.
The complex today includes the ruins of a quadriportico, and its brick arch, adjacent to thermal baths with a mosaicof Neptune. In addition, numerous ruins of Roman residences, both Republican and Imperial era, are disseminated around the park.
