The Aniene Valley Nature Reserve is a protected area in the north-eastern suburbs of Rome. It extends for 650 hectares along the city tract of the River Aniene, from the outer ring road to its confluence with the River Tiber. The Aniene flows into the Tiber north of the city, after travelling 120km from its source in Monti Simbruini. Numerous river bays cut through various neighbourhoods in the east of Rome: La Rustica, Tor Cervara, Tor Sapienza, Colli Aniene, Ponte Mammolo, Casal de' Pazzi, Pietralata, Monte Sacro, Trieste. Outside the city are places of great interest including the Acqua Vergine springs, the crater of ancient Lake Castiglione and the area of Pantano Borghese.
Inside the reserve which is mostly flat, Pratone delle Valli and the Cervelletta complex are particularly important from a naturalistic perspective. The Nomentano Bridge dates to the era of Menenio Agrippa with additions during the Middle Ages and Renaissance.
