Linosa, part of the Pelagian archipelago with Lampedusa and Lampione, has a fractured pumice coastline, impenetrable black beaches lapped by a very green sea and a single residential centre featuring elegant square pastel-coloured buildings gathered around a little port.
The only sandy beach is cala Pozzolana di Ponente, a lick of dark sand at the foot of Mount Nero, set between walls of worn smooth rock. Other beaches include contrada Mannarazza, punta Calcarella, punta Beppe Tuccio and cala Pozzalana di Levante.
The northern side of the island features wells, called natural pools, formed by clumps of rock at the edge of the sea and, 900m to the east, the sea-stacks of the faraglioni di Linosa, whose volcanic dark rock contrasts dramatically with the blue and emerald green of the sea.
Although inactive for over 2,500 years, the volcanoes are still a feature of the landscape with their conical shape and dead craters: in the centre of the island is the main crater, fossa del Cappellano, wide and low (600m in diameter) crowned by three peaks, mount Vulcano (195m), mount Rosso (186m) and mount Nero (107m) which has a small crater of 50m on its slopes. The valleys are covered with swathes of prickly pear plants.
A large part of the territory of Linosa, which extends a little over 5 km2, is covered with reserves which have protected its nature and kept it pristine and wild.
