Ancient Hiera, Marettimo is the highest, most remote and mountainous of the Egadi islands, the archipelago to the extreme west of Sicily, situated a few miles off the Trapani shore. It is characterised by numerous promontories and caves with stalagmites, stalactites and limescale deposits that have created fanciful shapes and prompted the strangest of names: the camel cave, the nativity scene, the pipe, and the bomber, named for the noise produced by the waves. Majestic pink rock precipices stretch from punta Troia to punta Libeccio while the white rock at cala Bianca reaches up to 400m in height.
The island features: a small fishing village with little houses stacked up against each other; the Roman houses, a Roman-era complex with the ruins of a large building dating between the 1st and 2nd century CE and a small Byzantine church; the lighthouse of Punta Libeccio, bubbling with legend; the semaforo, a viewpoint overlooking the Mediterranean Sea; and the Norman castle of Punta Troia, which has been restored and is now the Prisons Museum and observatory for the Protected Marine Area of the Egadi Islands.
