Not far from the residential centre of Sampieri, a picturesque fishing village with little stone cottages on the seafront, a hamlet of Scicli (RG), are the ruins of the Penna brickworks, a factory operational between 1912-1924 and destroyed by arson. The ruins of this example of industrial archaeology survive, battered by winds and the sea air, on a cliff that overlooks the sea at punta Pisciotto at the end of a long beach.
The building has three storeys: the main part has a cathedral layout which makes it look like an ancient church, to one side was the chimney, and a large space was created around it, surrounded by vines, where the fired products were left to dry before being sold.
The Penna factory is now known to residents of the area and visitors as the famous mannara in the Inspector Montalbano TV series.
