Built in the 17th century, the Tonnara of Portopalo di Capo Passero (province of Syracuse) was active until 1900: the tuna fish caught here provided a key economic resource for the local populations. Today the structure is a significant example of industrial archaeology. The ovens for preparing the fish, the warehouses and the church can all be seen today.
In the nearby area is a Sicilian art déco building from 1933 commissioned by marquis Bruno di Belmonte, sold in 1960 to a businessman from Pachino, Gaetano Tafuri.
