Racalmuto stands at an altitude of about 450m near a high plateau in the hinterland of Agrigento. Its medieval centre developed around a castle built in the 1300s by Federico Chiaramonte. The urban design of the city was modified in the 16th century with the building of Carmelite, Franciscan and Augustinian convents.
The Chiaramontano Castle has a central keep and two cylindrical towers and is one of the most important buildings in the city along with the Sanctuary of Santa Maria del Monte, built between 1736-1747 on the site of a 15th century church. The main thoroughfare of Racalmuto, corso Garibaldi, features a life-size bronze statue of Leonardo Sciascia (1921-1989) who was born here: the sculptor Beppe Agnello portrays the writer mid-step as if walking down the sidewalk in the midst of his fellow citizens.
